Continuing the articles on classic consoles (see the first of the series here), this article show an enhancement of the Master System: a Pistola Light Phaser. She was also manufactured by Tec Toy in Brazil, and it was marketed as the Master System and the Master System II been on the market. Just disappearing when the Tec Toy released the second model Master System, here called Master System III, although the Light Phaser Gun was compatible with the Master System III. Only the 3D glasses lost its entry into this new model.
My second game was a Tec Toy Master System II with Alex Kidd in Miracle World in memory, a joystick and the cartridge “Summer Games (California Games)” Toast. The Master System II Brazilian was still the same model as the first Master System, just changing the memory games that were initially Hang On and Safari Hunt. Unfortunately I do not have the Master System. It was sold when I was a teenager. But the accessories ended up with me, to somewhat forgotten for not more utility. In this article I talk about the Light Phaser Gun, and in the next articles I will talk about the other.
Pistola Light Phaser
A Pistola Light Phaser se conecta na entrada de joystick do Master System (and also using the Mega Drive Adapter for Master System games) and allows shoot objects and characters on the screen. The library of games that use the Light Phaser is not great, and rental I attended there were only two of them: Gangster Town e Rambo III, then were only these two I played at the time. In my TV sighting was somewhat offset to one side, which hindered my performance a little, and there was no way to calibrate. Nevertheless, I enjoyed a lot with these two games, but only when rented because I had none. I got to play the Gangster Town two players, when I took my Light Phaser at the home of a colleague who also had his.
Around this time one of my cousins had a Top Game (clone de Nintendinho) with the gun and the Duck Hunt game, I really liked. In his TV, older and black and white, not the case displacement. I think the difference is the TV because one day he took the Top Game in my house and I got there that the hundredth phase of Duck Hunt on his TV, barely passed the first on my TV. For the record, My TV was a year Sharp 70/80, those leading to tune 8 channels and select them at the touch of a finger, without pressing.
I always wanted to Safari Hunt Master System thinking it would be a similar game to Duck Hunt. I could never. I think the Tec Toy was never throws l0 in Brazil, except for the version that came in memory of the first Master System. But today I can finally play all these games thanks to Mega Everdrive. Simply place the ROMs on it and play on the Mega Drive, with the Light Phaser Pistol connected. And I still did not do it? Because the Light Phaser Gun unfortunately works only on CRT TVs (TVs with cathode ray tube) and my TV is installed where the Mega Drive is an LCD. But still have a CRT TV, then one of these days I will still connect the Mega Drive it and youre games that use the Light Phaser Gun. And I still enjoy to know the games that could only play emulators, with crosshairs using a cursor controlled by the mouse, which is not the same.
Light Phaser gun would certainly not manufactured and / or marketed these days as it is. The problem is not only not compatible technology LCDs TVs, but also the fact that most countries have laws that prevent today the manufacturing / marketing toy guns that look like real guns. Moreover, the state of São Paulo is prohibited the marketing of any toy gun. The fact is that more and more weapons video game were abandoning the black and adopting fancy colors and bright, a phenomenon similar to what happened with the cleats soccer players, but for an entirely different reason.
I find it very difficult for the Light Phaser be mistaken for a real gun, since it is entirely made of plastic, has an attached cable, a lens barrel in, among other characteristics. But still this guy down there used something very like a Light Phaser to invade a home and collect a debt of R $ 42,00, and then make a woman 60 years of hostage.
Wait for the next chapter with some more Master System Accessories.
Hello! Can you explain how this light faser gun technology works?
Yes. What's in the Phaser Light Gun is a light sensor. CRT TVs draw each picture frame on the screen using cathode rays, moving from the upper left to the lower right. They scan the screen making a horizontal line, and reaching the right end they turn to the left down to the next line. This full scan is performed approximately 60 times per second, which is the time to draw a picture, actually, a field of a frame, because in each pass she draws half the lines, alternately, in an odd step, in the other the pairs, doing what we call the interlaced image. The point of the Phaser Light Gun is to be able to detect the exact moment when the lightning bolt passes through the point where it is aimed, because it gives a strong pulse of light at that moment. Our eyes don't realize it, but the sensor yes. To know where the gun is aimed, what the console does is calculate the time between it starting to draw a field and the moment when the light spot is detected. Remember that the dot moves across the screen… Read more "
Got it. But the pistol also works on progressive scan CRT TVs? I had a Philips 29PT8422 (if I remember correctly) which was HDTV ready. It was that last CRT breath of the LCD HDTV advance, remember?
Then I can't tell you. I think it depends on how they handle interlaced signal and whether they introduce any latency.
