With the popularity of pendrives and External HDs, My use of optical media was drastically reduced. But eventually still need to use them: installation of operating systems, recovery discs, diagnosis, etc. At such times I was half upset of having to use my older media, great quality, to record content that does not need to be preserved for a long time, because they will have limited use until they are out of date. I prefer to let the great quality of media to backup important things, as wedding videos, graduations, and for the world titles of the glorious club which is the only triple world champion in Brazil. 🙂
When we talk about quality, take into account this excellent review of quality media. My old media are considered first class, as manufactured by Sony Daxon. I bought CD-R and DVD + R from Sony first class tube still in the past decade, and with little use they are lasting till today. But the Daxon stopped manufacturing in media 2010, thereafter the media of Sony became the only second-class, manufactured by Ritek and by Moser Baer.
Find in-class media market today is almost impossible mission, so I chose to make a new media stock of second class to use in daily life, leaving the first class that had to premium content. Furthermore, invest also in rewritable media to use content that will only be used infrequently or that need to be updated frequently, like memtest86.
And this was my purchase, with 50 CD-R, 50 DVD R, 25 CD-RW, and 25 DVD RW

I bought online some SONY DVD+R thinking I will get those white labeled blanks I used for 5-10 years with absolutely no issue, but instead I got those awful RITEK ones. Mine are with blue and green label, so I suppose there are also other colour besides mine and yours. I failed 7 blanks trying to burn them at 16x, 8x and 4x on several burners I have, until I tried at the damn-low 2.4x, which is where they stopped failing. My burners are very old, the newest is manufactured in 2008, so it’s whether the laser getting lower for these newer dye technology (Fuji Oxonol Dye) nor the older drives are incompatible with this new dye and/or technology. But fortunately I found a fix for not throwing away all the 300 blanks I have purchased. It’s pretty hard nowadays to find high quality blanks, even the Verbatims and TDKs are shitty nowadays. Cheers!
