[Review] Mega EverDrive X 7 – Deluxe Edition

Today I talk about the Mega EverDrive X 7 – Deluxe Edition I acquired on Stone Age Gamer. Who monitors the Skooter Blog you've probably read the article about My first Mega EverDrive, posted in 2013. If you don't read, strongly recommend reading before continuing. Sometime later, It was released version 2 (v2), which was later renamed to X 7, What is this I've acquired and show in this article.

What is the Mega Everdrive X 7?

The Mega EverDrive X 7 brings all the advantages of the first version and a few more extras. Have a Mega EverDrive is to have the entire library of games Mega Drive in a single cartridge. The Mega EverDrive X 7 allows you to upload copies of games (known as ROMs) in a microSD card, put the microSD card in the Mega EverDrive, put the Mega EverDrive on a Mega Drive (or Sega Genesis) and plays them as in the original cartridges.

And that's not all, with the Mega EverDrive also can play all games of Master System on the Mega Drive, without adapter. And who's got a 32 x, You can also play the entire library of the 32 x games with Mega EverDrive.

It is also possible to bypass the protections of the regional games, because the Mega EverDrive X 7 can “cheat” the code of the game, pretending that your console's region.

The Mega EverDrive also allows you to save and continue in most of the games Mega Drive, as if it were an emulator, even if the game does not have support for save states.

Other interesting features include:

  • Support 99% the games of SEGA's library: Of all the games released officially to the console, I just know the Virtua Racing does not work, to have a special chip in the cartridge that helps in processing.
  • 128Mbit (16MByte) of PSRAM.
  • Supports ROMs of up 120mbit (15MByte): Super Street Fighter II was the largest official game Mega Drive, with 40mbit, so 120mbit is plenty of room for the official games and a great space for the homebrews.
  • 256Kbyte Battery RAM: A good portion of Mega Drive use SRAM and battery to save data that persist after the console is turned off. This is commonly used to save the current state of the game, Save settings, records, etc. The Mega EverDrive guard that data in RAM and saved on the SD card, by uploading them again the next time the game is loaded.
  • FAT32 file system support: no problems with higher-capacity microSD cards.
  • Instant load: There is no wait time to load the games as in flash memory cartridges, because the Mega EverDrive uses RAM (SDRAM in v1 and v2 the PSRAM).
  • Audio player for WAV files, GYM, TFC, etc.
  • In-game menu: with a combination of directional and button you can access a menu within the game to save or go back to the menu of choice of games without having to go to the console.
  • Support cheats: Supports the formats of the Game Genie and the Play-Action Replay.
  • Sega CD BIOS load.
  • Works like RAM cartridge for the Sega CD.

Mega v1 Everdrive versus Mega Everdrive v2 (X 7)

Why did I upgrade from version 1 for version 2? The differences are not many. But I'll list here the main of them:

  • Core YM2413 by Necronomfive: This is a feature that was not available when the Mega EverDrive X 7 was released. Was implemented by Necronomfive and then incorporated into the official operating system. With this feature, the EverDrive X 7 emulates in your FPGA chip Yamaha YM2413, present in the Master System Japanese. Therewith, It is possible to get sound in FM Master System compatible.
  • Support for EEPROM saves: As já mencionei, Some games of Mega Drive a SRAM and battery where save data that persist after the console is turned off, and this is commonly used to save the current state of the game, Save settings, records, etc. But, There are some games that use an EEPROM instead of SRAM. The Mega EverDrive X 7 supports the saves in EEPROM.
  • SSF2 extended mapper support: The game Super Street Fighter II uses a mapper extended to be able to access all 40 Mbit of ROM, Once the Mega Drive can only access 32 Mbits directly. The Mega EverDrive v1 already gave partial support to this mapper. In Mega EverDrive X 7 support is complete. I believe that this only matters in homebrews, Since Super Street Fighter II was the only official game using the mapper extended, and this game was already supported in previous version.
  • Saves without reset: In Mega EverDrive v1 data saved in RAM only go to the SD card when the reset button of the console is pressed. Forgot to press before unplugging the console? Lost the saves. In Mega EverDrive X 7 that doesn't happen more, because it has a battery to keep the RAM.
  • MicroSD card slot: the My Mega Everdrive v1 has SD card slot, so the card is protruding into the cartridge. The Mega EverDrive X 7 uses a microSD card, that is totally into the cartridge, more discreet.
  • Better compatibility with clone systems.
  • Improved hardware design and reduced power consumption.
  • Improved software.

To mim, the two most interesting features are the saving without needing reset and the core YM2413. Previously I had already acquired a PowerBase Mini FM, in order to play the games of Master System with the FM audio. Now I don't have to use it.

What is the best solution from the point of view of quality is something debatable. The YM2413 core is an implementation of the Yamaha chip on FPGA Mega EverDrive X 7. It's still an emulation. On the other hand, the PowerBase Mini FM uses a YM2413 chip even. But, is a Chinese clone made with the same specification as the original Yamaha. They are sold cheap on AliExpress. The developer himself PowerBase Mini FM discard about of 30% These chips for no work or present noise. In other words, He does the quality control that the Chinese don't do. And the question I leave is: What is more faithful to the original Yamaha YM2413? The Chinese clone or emulation in FPGA?

Por fim, the Mega Everdrive v1 already had your development terminated, will not receive new versions of the operating system or new features. The Mega EverDrive X 7 still has your active development and can still receive new updates and features, just as happened with the core YM2413.

What is the Deluxe Edition?

The Mega EverDrive X 7 has a number of resellers around the world. It is possible buy it directly from the website of krikzz or in one of the resales. A Stone Age Gamer is one, based in the U.S. and sends to the world.

The Stone Age Gamer sells three versions of Mega EverDrive X 7. All use the same krikzz Board, but vary in extras. Check out:

  • Basic Edition: Basic version with just the black cartridge, black label and common screws. You can choose the color of the cartridge, of the label, put anodized screws, and include extras like a microSD card and a cap for USB port, but all with additional charge.
  • Deluxe Edition: In the Deluxe version you can choose the color and label cartridge, without additional cost. Anodized screws are also included, in black or red with no additional cost, or in purple, with additional charge. This version also comes with box, best quality label, a gold label on the back, manuals, and adhesives. The CAP from the USB port is included. The microSD card is optional. This is a more complete and polished version of the product, to look good on the shelf.
  • Custom Edition: This is the version that can be completely customized. There 28 color choices for the front and the back of the cartridge. 24 color options for the label. 5 options of screws. Literally any color for the back label that originally is golden (can pass the hexadecimal RGB code they do in chosen color). Several items have additional cost. It also comes with all the additional items from the Deluxe version.

Three versions cost, respectively, US$ 145,99, US$ 165,99, e US$ 184,99. O frete custa US$ 27,20 by USPS First Class or $ 48,65 by USPS Priority.

Another resale is the Retrogate Store, of Cyprus, It also sends to the world. Was it that I bought My first Mega EverDrive. There the Mega EverDrive X 7 costs $ 143,00 only by card or $ 152,00 the cartridge Board. The shipping is $ 8,00.

A krikzz store sells a single version, with the cartridge and a box. The price is $ 166,00 and the shipping is $ 6,00. This was an option that didn't exist when I bought the My first Mega EverDrive. At the time could only buy with resales.

Where to buy so? Depends. Want with box? Stone Age Gamer or krikzz store. Want a product fulfil? Stone Age Gamer. Want just the cartridge at the lowest price? Retrogate Store. Want to arrive faster? Stone Age Gamer, because even the USPS First Class is a lot faster than the economic freight from other countries.

I ended up opting for the Stone Age Gamer for two reasons:

  • The store has a ticketing system. Every purchase gives a certain amount of tickets that can be used as a discount on the next purchase. I had 660 tickets, obtained in my previous purchases, what earned me a discount of $ 15,40.
  • At the end of October, There was a Halloween promotion, discounted 5% in all Everdrive.

With both rebates, the Deluxe version, with USPS First Class shipping, He went for only $ 168,50. It was the cheapest of options at the time. I also include a 32 GB microSD card for $ 22,80. Grand total: US$ 191,29.

Final Considerations

For those who, I like, enjoy playing the games Mega Drive in a Mega Drive of truth, and there's no room and/or money to make a collection of rounds, at Mega EverDrive It is essential.

Need not necessarily be the Mega EverDrive X 7. The Mega EverDrive X 5 and Mega EverDrive X 3 (that have not been covered in this article) has fewer resources, but it also has much lower cost, and can meet who makes no issue of additional functions.

And for those who already have the EverDrive mega v1, the upgrade for the new Mega EverDrive vale a pena? Não necessariamente. Para os Mega EverDrive X 5 and Mega EverDrive X 3 not worth it, pois perde-se funcionalidades.
