This is another article in the series Problems and Solutions. This time the challenge is to install the “Additional Guest CD” from the Oracle VM VirtualBox in a Linux Fedora 27 Workstation.
The “Additional Guest CD” can be inserted virtually in the virtual drive of the virtual machine (There's a lot of virtual in that sentence!) and be installed to provide additional functionality, as the easy sharing of files between the host operating system and guest, shared clipboard, among others.
Install “Additional Guest CD” is trivial on many systems, as Windows 10 or Linux Ubuntu, but in Fedora thing is more complicated, because some required packages does not come installed by default. And so the installation fails. Oracle could predict this and already trigger installation of missing packages automatically, but unfortunately this is not the case.
The solution that I found came from LinuxBabe.com, and reproduce here, with adaptations:
First, updated Fedora completely
sudo dnf update && sudo dnf upgrade
Then, install the needed packages:
sudo dnf install dkms gcc kernel-devel kernel-headers
To be able to access shared folders, you must add the user to the Group vboxsf, This is done with the following command:
sudo usermod -aG vboxsf userName
Por fim, restarts the Fedora:
sudo shutdown -r now
Shared folders automatically stay within the '/media '.
