In this article I talk about the Analogue Super Nt, the modern Analogue Super Nintendo, all re-implemented in FPGA, with HDMI and Full HD resolution (1080p).
Who monitors the Skooter Blog know my appreciation for videogames, as much as modern classics. And Super Nintendo certamente é um de meus preferidos. It was the fourth and final video game of my childhood. Won in 1993, if memory serves me, and got it today. São mais de 25 anos com ele.
É fato que ele ficou um tanto parado por um bom tempo, desde a segunda metade dos anos 90, quando comecei a jogar no PC e depois descobri os emuladores. Afinal eu só tinha um cartucho: the Super Mario World.
There are those who just want to play and are satisfied with the software emulators. Do not require high fidelity and don't care about some latency. I don't know if it's the happiest, but certainly are those who spend less. 🙂
There are those who don't want to mess with settings and emulators, and are content with the common clones consoles, like Hyperkin. These are software emulators, have problems such as latency and are less loyal to the emulators of the State-of-the-art, as the Higan. But meet the demand of those who want something easy and cheap to call and play.
There are also those who want to play with the original console, is fidelity, the nostalgia. And here we have also some subcategories. There are those who prefer the original experience, with CRT TV and composite video cable or RF, because it was once played in childhood. The argument “That's how I remember” is strong in some cases.
There are those who prefer the original console, but I don't care too much about image quality, If complying with composite video on LCD TV, Although the picture somewhat blurry and distorted.
There are those who want to improve the original experience, bringing the RGB, but keeping the CRT. These are the ones who will spend more, in the search for professional monitors (Pvms and BVMs) that are increasingly rare and expensive.
And finally there's the team where I belong more, those who want to combine the original console to modern TVs Full HD LCD and 4 k, through the RGB signal and upscalers. This last option tends to not be as expensive as the CRT monitors professionals, and also takes up less space.
The fact is that the search for the perfect image and sound of the old consoles without end. I myself started with a upscaler Chinese and then I spent for the Framemeister. And I've found myself tempted to acquire a OSSC on the smaller latency. Just don't do it for high price and account for not knowing if the models of triple/quadruple lines are compatible with my TV.
Cable Department SCART also started with a Chinese, and then I was gone for a CSYNC version of Retro Gaming Cables, and finally got a version with braid of individual conductors. And at least for the time being stopped around…
But there are people that do not to. How different versions of Super Nintendo produce images with different quality, Some people search for specific versions, like famous 1Chip, that I discussed here in Skooter Blog, or even specific revisions 1Chip. There are also those who make against in the Super Nintendo to extract digital audio SPDIF. However these choices bring their negatives: the SNES 1Chip is almost a clone of the original, bringing some glitches and other imperfections. And do against It is also something that takes the console before original originality.
The Analogue Super Nt
And while we were searching for the perfect picture and sound in the original Super NES, sprung Analogue with the Analogue Super Nt. This is not just another clone of Super Nintendo emulator software that runs, but a reimplementation of the original Super Nintendo hardware in an FPGA.
For those unaware, FPGA is the acronym for Field Programmable Gate Array -something like "Programmable Ports arrangement in field". Is a type of chip reprogramável designed to be configured by a designer, or even a consumer, after manufacture. This programming is done at the level of logic gates, that correspond to the basic unit any digital circuit.
An FPGA implementation by itself does not guarantee quality, but she has some intrinsic benefits. Normal PCs take advantage of clocks far beyond original consoles to stagger between the various chips being emulated, paying attention to one at a time. In many cases make a higher level emulation, without emulating each chip individually, often making use of some hacks. But they suffer from the synchronization between the components and the latency inherent in the operating system (Windows, Linux, etc.) It was not designed for real-time tasks. FPGAs are parallel in nature, and this ensures the Analogue Super Nt a zero-latency.
But that's not all, in terms of quality the Analogue has Kevin Horton, better known as kevtris, the creator of against Hidef NES, that allows you to add an HDMI output on the Nintendinho of 8 bits. He is the genius behind the implementation of the Analogue Super Nt, and also of the NT mini and the Mega Sg, Nintendo 8 bits in FPGA and the Mega Drive in FPGA, respectively. The latter is on pre-sale, scheduled for release in April.
Kevtris implementation is very good, a near-perfect replica of the original hardware in FPGA, and with zero latency! Except for a few bugs that still appear in specific games, It behaves identically to a Super Nintendo. After reading and watching many reviews from the Analogue Super Nt I concluded it was more worthwhile to invest in it than continue in a never-ending search for the best image of the original Super NES, that never would have rivaled the image and sound of the Analogue Super Nt.
I was no longer willing to invest time and money in the search for the best model of Super Nintendo, because everyone has their problems. The 1Chip can have a sharper image, but it also has glitches, excessive brightness, etc.
Neither was willing to install against to have digital audio. E no caso da imagem, even with Framemeister ou o OSSC, ainda temos uma conversão digital -> analog-> digital. The Analogue Super Nt elimina essas conversões sendo 100% digital. Just connect it directly on TV and enjoy excellent picture and digital sound, 1080 p resolution. As upscalers, without SCART cables. Is turn on and play.
I was determined, My next investment sometimes would be a Analogue Super Nt.
Choice of the model Analogue Super Nt
The Analogue Super Nt It was initially available in four models:
- Classic, inspired by the American model Super Nintendo.
- Black, all black.
- SF, inspired by the Super Famicom, that is the Japanese Super NES.
- Transparent, translucent plastic (discontinued).
Opted for the model Classic, because my Super Nintendo is the American model, He comes to memory when I think about Super Nintendo.
Recently also emerged the model Ghostly, all white, in partnership with the Ghostly. This model is more expensive (US$ 249,99 vs $ 189,99 the other models), but he comes with a control (also all white), While the other comes without controls.
The purchase of the Analogue Super Nt
The Analogue Super Nt can only be purchased directly from the Analogue. Unfortunately the Analogue does not send to Brazil. They even make international shipments, but just to civilized countries. Don't want to risk with our bad postal system and absurd taxes. And how they work with UPS, the price would be impossible anyway with 100% de imposed.
Because of this, I had to use a redirection service. To perform this service opted for Direct Shipments, offering similar service to the Shipito, which I have already spoken a lot here in Skooter Blog.
Then did the purchase of Analogue Super Nt on pre-sale of July, postage scheduled for September. The post ended up being made in early October. Cost of $ 189,99 for the console and $ 23,57 shipping to California, by UPS, in the category UPS Ground. It was delivered the day after the post.
The package weighs 3 pounds according to the UPS. A Direct Shipments assessed in 3 pounds and 3 oz. Were sent 3 Photos: box sticker, the box in the balance, and the Open box with the product on your packaging, wrapped in bubble wrap.
Opted for the shipping to Brazil via USPS First Class, the cost of US $ 56,70, including the cost of Direct Shipments. The package arrived in my hands 10 days, including a Post error that sent the package to stroll in the wrong town. Was not taxed and had no incidence of postal dispatch rate.
Check out the photos and the video of the unboxing from the Analogue Super Nt:
The Analogue Super Nt comes with a HDMI cable, a USB cable, and a power source in the American standard, Analogue logo. On the back of the console have the HDMI and USB power input.
Checking the box also comes with an envelope full of dismantling Super Turrican Director's Cut, that comes on the console memory. This is an unreleased game. The Super Turrican released in 1993 needed to be reduzidopara fit into a cartridge 4 megabits. So I just now had access to full version, with 6 megabits, as originally designed. In memory of the console also comes Super Turrican 2 original, released in 1995.
Both games are duly licensed. Remember, the Analogue Super Nt It's a cool equipment (also in the legal sense), Since the Super Nintendo hardware patents have already expired, so that they don't need permission from Nintendo to make a clone. And note that they do not use the name Nintendo nowhere. As the original firmware only performs the memory games and cartridges, everything is on American law.
The Analogue Super Nt não vem com controles. It can be used with the original controls of the Super Nintendo and also with the controls 8bitdo, which launched SN30 models following the model of each design Super Nt. I already had two 8btido SNES30 e have Retro Receivers, and they are what I am using. Third-party controls that work on the original Super Nintendo should also work in Analogue Super Nt smooth.
The Analogue Super Nt It works with Super Nintendo cartridges or Super Famicom any region, without regional locks (not software but not físicas), accepting including NTSC and PAL games without restrictions, simply configure it to function in the desired video system. It also works with SD2SNES no restrictions.
The Analogue console also supports the vast majority of the Super Nintendo accessories. An exception is the Super Scope, which works only on CRT TVs, even with the Super Nintendo original. an accessory promised to provide analog outputs and allow connect Super Nt I CRT TVs, but so far it has not been released.
Remember, the Analogue Nt mini (the NES FPGA) has analog and digital outputs, but Super Nt It has only natively digital outputs, what was done to cut costs. The Analogue Nt mini cost $ 449,00.
On the right side there is an SD card, that serves to make firmware updates. But, there is also a unofficial firmware allowing charge from the ROMs SD. With it you can run all games of the Super Nintendo without original cartridges, except the games that use special chips. Because of this I prefer to use the SD2SNES same, that already supports nearly all special chips.
The unofficial firmware can also be used to make dump the ROMs of the cartridges, What could be interesting for those who have some rare cartridge, with some different version of a game.
Installation and testing
The installation of the Analogue Super Nt is very quiet, simply connect the source in the HDMI cable on TV. The USB cable doesn't have to be necessarily linked in the source, Anyone who wants to can feed him with a USB port of the TV or even a POWERBANK.
To turn on the console see an animated introduction sequence forming the logo of Analogue. Is very good and different to every boot. Apparently it is made with native code even SNES. The introduction has a delay configurable (from 0 a 10 seconds, pattern 4 seconds) to start showing, to give time for the HDMI do overhead handshaking between console and TV. This is great, because use 2 switches, at splitter and an receiver on the way between console and TV, that allow me to capture audio and video, do live broadcasts and listen to the audio on the system of 7.1 channels. The handshaking all of this takes a few seconds, and as the delay I don't miss the introduction.
After the introduction, pops up the menu where you can choose to run the contents of the cartridge connected, one of the two sets of memory or alter the settings. Everything is configurable, who doesn't want introduction sequence can configure the console to connect directly from the menu. Who doesn't even want the menu you can configure it to run directly the cartridge.
Speaking of settings, There are settings for all tastes. Screen Format, resolution, appearance, scalers, all configurable. For those who like scanlines, they can be added. Until the LED indicating operation is configurable and has a few colors and color sequences the user's choice.
I particularly just changed the look to 4:3 to 16:9, showing the game in the original appearance of TVs 4:3, leaving black borders on the sides. The default is 8:7. I kept the default resolution of 1080p60, that scalers and without scanlines.
kept the buffer not so zero delay, leaving the game 0,15% slower than the original, because the original Super Nintendo uses a refresh rate of approximately 60,08 Hz, somewhat out of 59,94 Hz of the NTSC standard. CRT TVs generally tolerate this difference, but don't LCD TVs, so the set. The 0,15% are imperceptible, but those who prefer can use the modes single buffer or fully buffered. Both keeps the original speed, but at the cost of an unwanted effect vertical tearing during scrolling horizontal, or some lost frames and some latency, respectively. Are not defects in the Analogue Super Nt, but characteristics of own interaction between SNES games and LCD TVs. What Analogue does is give various options to go around them.
The settings can be adjusted even with the games running, simply activate the menus through the hotkeys, What are directional down and the SELECT button by default. Another hotkey indispensable is up directional + SELECT, that makes the reset from the console. With the SD2SNES gives even to do the reset short or long (reset the game and reset to the menu) holding the hotkey for less or more time, without relying on hotkeys the cartridge itself, that they are incompatible or cause glitches in some games. Note 10 in sedentary Question, you don't have to leave the couch to nothing. 🙂
Check out the photos of my Analogue Super Nt after installation:
I have connected the Analogue Super Nt on top of the rack for the first tests, but then repositioned it next to the original Super NES, where once stood the Playstation One. The reason for the return is that the cartridge in the Analogue Super Nt just getting in front of the TV if he stays on top of the rack, What does not occur with the Playstation One, using CDs. With the exchange the Playstation family ended up getting together: Playstation One, Playstation 3 and Playstation 4 For.
In these 3 months that I'm with Analogue Super Nt already recorded 25 videos and live broadcasts. Made a playlist with all of them on the Skooter Blog channel on Youtube. New videos will be added as they are written. At the time I write this article I've tested many classics on it, be sure to check:

I am very pleased with the Analogue Super Nt. Since the acquisition even called my original Super NES. The image and the sound of Analogue Super Nt are superior even considering the original console with RGB + upscaler. Although there are some outstanding bugs, I never encountered any of them. It certainly is far ahead of other clones that have appeared on the market.
I liked both of the Analogue Super Nt I decided to invest in the company's new product. Already entered the pre-sale Analogue Mega Sg, even though he is still in development, having only a few videos gameplay to show it, in addition to graphical computing product images. I believe Kevtris will also make an attack on that island.
Of course, a clone will never be the orginal console, then this may not be an option for anyone who wishes to see the original hardware under the TV while playing. But I surrendered to Analogue Super Nt and I do not intend to go back. Of course I still have my Super Nintendo from 25 years and do not intend to give it up. Still even installed, but in the future he may go back to the box, actually, he may go to my CRT TV, where I can have the same childhood experience as you desire. It's the best of both worlds: Analogue Super Nt in modern LCD TV and original Super Nintendo in CRT TV.
Update (13/01/2019): I forgot to mention an important detail. Some Super Nintendo games alternate between 240p and 480i resolutions during the game. They end up being feasible for the use of upscalers like Framemeister because they are slow to change the resolution and get no picture for a few seconds. On Analogue Super Nt the exchange is instantaneous.
