[Review] Super Nintendo Original NTSC PCB SHVC-CPU-01 CPU/PPU1/PPU2 2/1/3

The Super Nintendo I show in this article is more a copy of the American model, original NTSC (without ever having been transcoded to PAL-M), with the printed circuit board SHVC-CPU-01. This is the first model of PCB, which had a discrete audio card. Because of that this Super Nintendo model is considered to have the best sound. This sound card is integrated into the motherboard to future versions to cut costs.

This Super Nintendo has the latest versions (2/1/3) the three main chips: CPU, PPU1 is PPU2, respectively. After that there were other updates, including integrating the three chips in one, the revisions known as 1chip, but the version numbers were not changed, and always remained as 2/1/3.

This Super Nintendo was acquired in eBay, and shaft Santa Barbara, city located in the state of California, USA. I used the parcel forwarding services Direct Shipments, offering similar services to the Shipito, already evaluated several times here in Skooter Blog.

Motivation

This article can be seen as a continuation of previous article, in which I talked about the acquisition of the Super Nintendo Original NTSC PCB SHVC-CPU-01 CPU/PPU1/PPU2 1/1/1, therefore strongly recommend reading that article before continuing.

I was still awaiting the arrival of Super Nintendo SHVC-CPU-01 1/1/1 when I came across the Super Nintendo this article. It was a rare announcement in which there were pictures of console inside, and he was pretty well. Interestingly the seller had announced as a SNS-CPU-RGB-02, but I noticed the board photos could not be that model. The external audio card was a clear indication that it was a SHVC-CPU-01, in addition to the serial number, rubber feet and other indications that I have shown in the preceding article. I contacted the seller and he confirmed it actually treat a SHVC-CPU-01, and then changed the ad.

The highest serial number, UN16265288, I was almost certain that it was a CPU / PPU1 / PPU2 2/1/3. This was the model that I longed for since the beginning, so I was interested in that island also.

It was not my plan to stay with two Super Nintendo. But when I was in search of a Master System II Tec Toy I also ended up buying two. I cleaned and restored the two consoles, accessories, the boxes, and cartridges. No final I ended up choosing to stay with the console that was in better condition, with accessories that were in better condition, and manuals and cartridges had only one copy. The other items I revendi for a better price than I paid, after all I had a good restoration work, which also won for learning. Give way, I thought I'd go the same way with the Super Nintendo.

The announcement

The eBay ad for this console is no longer available, but either way I saved the pictures so that you could know exactly what I saw in the ad before purchasing. Check out:

After my contact with the seller, he still sent a 13th photo, showing it is-exactly a SHVC-CPU-01:

Foto do Super Nintendo Original NTSC PCB SHVC-CPU-01 CPU/PPU1/PPU2 2/1/3, sent by the seller.

Foto do Super Nintendo Original NTSC PCB SHVC-CPU-01 CPU/PPU1/PPU2 2/1/3, sent by the seller.

As can be seen in the pictures, the console is with a very well preserved plate, with almost no oxidation. The plastic yellow with time, but still less than the my childhood console. Unfortunately there are some quebradinhos in plastic in thin parts inside, that are not apparent to the closed console. On the outside only a small latch on the right corner of the front. Ultimately, It is not perfect, but it is well above average.

The console was accompanied by two original controllers, power source and the A / V, everything seemed in perfect condition. There was no box, manuals, Cartridges, cabo not R.F. No problem for me, because I already have all this very well kept from my childhood.

The Purchase

The ad was for $ 85,00, including freight, and accepting offers. There was no option of sending abroad, then I used my address Direct Shipments in California to make an offer of US $ 70,00.

The seller accepted, but in time to pay eBay into trouble. I tried more than one card, but always appeared a message that could not process payment. I believe it is because the billing address is in Brazil and the shipping is in the US, which could be interpreted as a possible fraud. I contacted the seller and asked if I could pay via PayPal. Luckily he accepted and then I could pay it there.

When the box arrived in Direct Shipments, chose the freight USPS Priority, which is the cheapest considering the weight 5 pounds and 6 oz box (about 2,44 Kg). The cost was $ 70,95, including the services of Direct Shipments.

Arriving in Brazil, the package was for customs clearance in Rio de Janeiro and was taxed at $ 144,98. They ignored the declared value and took the hat (not to mention elsewhere) or value of US $ 60,00 for good, converted to R $ 241,64. It 60% this are the R $ 144,98 who were charged. They used a code “SUB-60-CEE” to IT, which seems to be some internal code. They not considered freight value, that was not declared. Better pay because soon anyway was already “not profit”, considering our immoral and abusive law.

Unboxing and Tests

The Super Nintendo came in a box a little larger than the previous. On the outside an inscription in ink with horrendous lyrics, but you can deduct that part is such SUB-60, as in the DIT, in other words, seems to be a note of the auditors the IRS. Perhaps one assess the case and make note to the pen, and another later put the data in the system.

Inside the box the items were all individually wrapped with plastic bubble, except A / V cable. Fortunately nothing is broken even with the relaxation end of the Post Office, who gave a beautiful “fanfold” in the box, a clear sign that she was thrown or pushed beyond what it should.

I soon realized that the seller sent a cable A / V different from what was advertised, because the ad was open and it was sealed in the original packaging of the brand Yobo. I do not know the reason for the change and preferred the original cable. But no major problems here, I did not complain to him.

The first conferred the remaining items were inside than I expected, and fine clean: console, source, and controllers.

This console also did not have latches that prevent the use of Super Famicom cartridges (the Japanese Super Nintendo) removed, as was common place in Brazil the years 90. He's intact locks, as factory. I prefer that.

With everything unpacked and checked, I tried just turning on the Super Nintendo on TV to test it. For these first tests made connecting with the A / V cable into TV LCD Panasonic TC-40DS600B my home office. There is no wonder, it recognizes the signal as 480i instead of 240p, but for the first tests is good.

Tested two cartridges pirates, one with and one without CIC chip, and thus I found that this console also has the chip intact CIC, what I prefer. In Brazil it was common on the islands make hacks to allow the execution of pirated cartridge without the chip CIC, but this has the side effect of not run some of the latest console games, like Mario RPG. Furthermore, these hacks made nastily has the potential to cause definitive damage to the plate.

I did some testing with some games and ROMs burn-in with the aid of SD2SNES and I found that everything was in order. Later I left the console on for several hours doing tests burn-in to make sure everything was in order even.

With the SD2SNES also confirmed the versions of CPU and PPUs, and actually it is a 2/1/3. further tested some random games to see if there appeared glitches or any console hint of problems.

After various tests console running it was time to open it to check how it was inside.

Opening the console found a very beautiful plate, with nothing moved. Few signs of oxidation appearing in metal shields and sound card.

Even the original terminal capacitors were shining, which is rare to see, they tend to leak electrolyte and oxidize the terminal.

Another notable feature is the absence of capacitor C67. It was placed in a capacitor C67 of 1000 uF the first shipments of SHVC-CPU boards-01. Later Nintendo failed to put this capacitor to cut costs. As or 1/1/1 I acquired and the 2/1/2 of my childhood You have this capacitor and this 2/1/3 has, It gives to deduce the time when Nintendo failed to include such a capacitor.

This is a filtering capacitor, and it tends not to be missed provided you use the original source, because it already has a capacitor these internally. Some people add this capacitor on their boards, which can eliminate any possible noise, especially if the font being used is third. It is curious to note that Nintendo kept the place for the C67 even in the plates that came after SHVC-CPU-01, even though I never returned to include the capacitor, no hair less American model.

In front of you can see the corners quebradinhos the part that is inside the console. Unfortunately this is the part where the plastic is thinner, and ends up breaking more easily.

The cartridge slot is removable, as in all SHVC-CPU-01.

Removing the metal shield could see that everything is beautiful and nothing moved on the board. NTSC crystal oscillator with the inscription D214J2 (X1). variable capacitor (TC1) also intact.

A close look at the main chips show CPU: “Nintendo S-CPU 5A22-02 2JF 9W”. na PPU1: "Nintendo S-PPU1 5C77-01 2JA 4N", and PPU2: “Nintendo S-PPU2 5C78-03 2HU 8W”. Note that versions hit with 2/1/3 extracted by software.

The CIC is intact as I suspected. No cut or leg raised track. Great! Once the peek more capacitors and no visible rust signal terminals.

I was ready to mount the console again when I noticed some small latches on the pole which is attached to switch on and off. Preemptively I put some epoxy glue of two components (Araldite) to prevent a possible break.

While the glue cured took to clean supplies, and controllers. They are beautiful, with a little scratch or other minimum only.

And even with the adhesive curing, the console was open even, making different types of tests.

And after a few hours closed the console and finished cleaning. Great stuff.

No final liguei o console e testei tudo novamente para ter certeza que não tinha esquecido nada desconectado internamente. Finally, vamos reunir o Super Nintendo e seus acessórios, agora todos limpinhos, para uma foto digna de enquadramento. 😀

Fiz ainda um teste do Super Nintendo com a Sony XBR 4K TV-55X905E, using the RGB outputs of the console connected to the Framemeister. Tudo funcionou perfeitamente e a imagem ficou muito bonita.

Levei então o console até a TV CRT, that's where it will stay connected. The result was a beautiful image, with much better color than I saw with consoles transcoded to PAL-M.

I decided to put side by side SHVC-CPU-01 1/1/1 the last purchase and this SHVC-CPU-01 2/1/3 to compare the-. It is noted that the 1/1/1 It is best preserved and less yellowish. Interestingly even the purple buttons have different shades in 1/1/1.

Por fim, also put the Super Nintendo of my childhood, destroyed by the Post Office, in the middle of the other two. He was the best preserved of all, Post before destroying it, I had no trinquinho. But in compensation, It is what got yellower.

Unboxing and Testing Video

The unboxing and Super Nintendo tests are also available on video, in the new format I am testing. Comments, criticism and suggestions are welcome.

Final Considerations

The two Super Nintendo SHVC-CPU-01, both 1/1/1 as this 2/1/3, They were purchased with about two weeks apart, but they ended up arriving on the same day, because I have needed to ask for tax review of the first, it took quite.

The island was as I expected, with the board in great condition, and the housing above average, with only those quebradinhos inside and in front trinquinho the outside. So I was pleased.

Between the 1/1/1 and the 2/1/3, the 1/1/1 is less yellowed and slightly more beautiful plate, without any sign of oxidation, except for the terminals of the capacitors. But the board 2/1/3 It is also great, much higher than the average.

Compared with most of the islands that are in Brazil, both are excellent. No transcoding, without jailbreaks, without hacks, nothing that could damage the PCB. At most need new electrolytic capacitors, as almost all Super Nintendo sooner or later need.

For now I'm getting the two. At first I sell one, but I think I'll end up with both because of the different versions of CPU and PPU. I'm following all the islands that appear in eBay (not turned off notifications) and it is rare in this state appears some. When appears for a good price goes fast though.

In a matter of values, I think it ended up being very reasonable. With the offer I made US $ 70,00, cost $ 15,00 unless or 1/1/1. It seemed a reasonable offer considering that this was with free shipping in the US, but without cartridge. Unfortunately shipping to Brazil came out more expensive than the console, e o imposto ainda encareceu um pouco mais.

Congratulations on your purchase! I intend to buy a snes this next year, until then I'll find enough in the ML and ebay!
You noticed the audio difference it compared to 1chip?

Now? The Gamecube palm M(bizarre format, europe mixed with NTSC 60hz) It does suffer these problems? I threw my mainboard in the trash…
