[Review] Xiaomi Mi Camera Home Security Camera 360 1080p WiFi Night Vision- AliExpress

A Xiaomi Mi Camera Home Security Camera 360 1080p WiFi Night Vision was acquired on AliExpress, shop GTopbuy Store. She's a smart camera, with motion detection, that can record images in the cloud, microSD memory card, and a NAS in the local network.

Motivation and Choice

Got the Xiaomi Mi Home Security Camera to keep an eye on my dog while I'm not home. The idea came up on the last day of 2018. I wouldn't be home at the time of turning 2019, when a bunch of imbeciles would surely set off fires, what scares dogs and other animals, much more sensitive hearing than ours.

So I took an old cell phone and installed the app on it Alfred Camera, available for Android and iOS, who ended up fulfilling his role that day. But with continuous use I realized many problems, the main one being that the app eventually stopped working and was inaccessible, not working when i needed it. Another problem is the lack of night vision. You can even turn on your phone's flash to see something in the dark, but it ends up bothering the animal.

I came to think that the problem was with the cell phone being used, um Samsung Galaxy Grand Duos. When I purchased my Xiaomi Mi 9, I spent my old one Motorola Moto Z Play to do the camera function. But the problems persisted.

So, I decided it was time to buy a decent camera to monitor the dog. I spent a few months maturing the idea and in November I finally bought. The requirements for the camera were:

  • Have WiFi so you don't have to run cables;
  • Be easily accessible by cell phone;
  • Saving the images, preferably in My in;
  • Night vision;
  • Possibility to send audio (talk to the dog).

With these requirements in mind, I discarded ordinary cameras that need DVR. Na AliExpress há muitas câmeras que poderiam atender os requisitos, but many of them are from unknown brands, and I take a step back from its perfect functioning and quality. In Brazil there are also some, but with higher prices.

On the other hand, Xiaomi is already a brand I know and trust. I am satisfied with several other branded products I have and I have already shown them here on the Skooter Blog. Check out some of them:

A Xiaomi Mi Home Security Camera 360º so it seemed like the ideal choice. Not only did I have everything I wanted but some more bonuses, as the motor to move it 360º horizontally and 96º vertically, allowing me to see not only the corner where the dog usually stays, as well as part of the yard.

I bought the Xiaomi Mi Camera Home Security Camera 360 the store GTopbuy da AliExpress. Note that the Chinese version of the camera bears the name Mijia, which is one of the brands of Xiaomi, while the export-oriented version bears Xiaomi's own brand. But the product is essentially the same, only changes the logo and the language the camera speaks the instructions at the time of configuration.

Even with the camera speaking Chinese, it's easy to set it up, and the app is in Portuguese, so that after installation it makes no difference whether the version is Chinese or export. I investigated all of this before making the purchase, to have no surprises.

The box Xiaomi Mi Home Security Camera 360º suffered some dents in transport, but the product was intact. The socket is in the American standard (Type A), but an adapter to work on Brazilian outlets was included by the seller, without additional cost.

Inside the package comes the camera, USB cable, power supply, which is bivolt (100~240V 50/60Hz) and offers 5V output voltage and 1A current, some brochures and a support with screws that allows you to attach the camera to walls or ceiling, with insert to easily insert and remove it.

Check out the photos and the video of the unboxing of Xiaomi Mi Home Security Camera 360º:

Installation, Configuration and Tests

As soon as I turned on the camera she started to move around and speak instructions in Chinese. I installed the software my Home no celular, I logged into my Xiaomi account with him, and through it I selected the installation of Xiaomi Mi Home Security Camera 360º.

Note that o my Home fits multiple Xiaomi smart devices, like cameras, smart outlets, smart light bulbs, purifiers, humidifiers, induction cookers, vacuum cleaner robots, presence sensors, temperature, moisture, opening doors and windows, water leak, and many others. You can automate the whole house with it, but for now I only have the camera.

The application then displays a QR Code on the cell phone, just show it to the camera and it automatically perceives it, focuses and reads user information to configure the camera on his account.

Setting up and controlling the camera via the app is very easy and intuitive. You can view it in a window or in full screen. It is possible to control movement vertically and horizontally. You can adjust the orientation of the image to install it upside down, as I did, without the videos being in the wrong orientation.

I pinned the camera under the granite stone of a counter, more specifically in the French hand (in France the French hand is known only as the hand?) that holds the stone and had a small gap where I managed to pass a nylon clamp and attach the support, without having to use the screws. Check out:

At first I didn't buy a microSD card, because I intended to do the recordings directly on the NAS. But, This is not possible. A microSD card is required in the camera, because it writes to the card first and then transfers it to the NAS. In continuous mode it makes one video file per minute, and the transfer of the card to the chosen folder of the NAS is done next, about 1 a 5 minutes, using the protocol samba. Luckily I had the 64GB microSD card that I used on my Motorola Moto Z Play, so he is breaking the branch until another card comes that I bought exclusively for the camera.

On the NAS, a Xiaomi Mi Home Security Camera 360º creates an hourly directory, in YEAR format + MONTH + DAY + TIME (Example: ‘2019122017’). Within each directory are, therefore, to 60 video files, one for every minute.

Files are recorded in 1080p and are between 10fps and 20fps, no formato MPEG-4 HEVC, with ADPCM audio. The video is in the 800 kbps (variable), and the audio 128 kbps (fixed). Here is an example of the characteristics of a file generated by Xiaomi Mi Home Security Camera 360º, captured by MediaInfo:

In the Xiaomi cloud the camera records only portions in which movements were detected, it is not possible to make continuous recording in the cloud. The camera detects and records movements so that it is easy to access only the videos of the moments when there was some movement through the application. You can also access any video at any time, either directly in the NAS files, either through the application. It is possible to define the times when the detection is active, interval between successive alarms, notifications push to the phone, etc. It is possible to save any video permanently through the application.

In the app you can also hear the audio in real time, or even open the microphone and speak to those close to the camera, because she has a speaker, beyond the microphone. It is also possible to capture photos and video clips.

Check out some screenshots of the application my Home, showing some features:

Unfortunately there is no version of Mi Home for Windows, so the only way to access the camera in real time on the PC is using an Android emulator. For this I have used the Nox Player, which is very easy to use.

The first time I used the camera engine my dog scared and walked away. Us 3 or 4 minutes later he returned, but I kept looking at the camera suspiciously all the time, e ficou assim por algum um tempo. Guardei os vídeos desses minutos em definitivo. 🙂 Agora ele já acostumou com ela e não se preocupa mais.

Final Considerations

I am quite satisfied with the Xiaomi Mi Camera Home Security Camera 360.
