[Unboxing] AMD Ryzen processor 9 3900X 12 nuclei, 24 threads – AliExpress

The AMD Ryzen processor 9 3900X 12 nuclei, 24 threads was acquired in AliExpress SZCPU Store to make a upgrade on my desktop PC. New processor, box version, sealed, by 36% less than that found in the national market, in installments in 6 times, and it came without taxes.

Motivation

My current desktop PC was mounted on 2013. Had a forced upgrade in 2014 because of a problem, apparently from source, that damaged motherboard and video card. But other than that little has been changed.

It currently has a processor Intel Core i7 4770, that always served me very well, with their 4 cores and 8 threads. ASUS Z87-DELUXE motherboard and 32GB de RAM DDR3 Corsair Dominator.

In the past it was common to have to do upgrade of processor every two or three years, because the software and the operating system itself were getting heavier with the updates. So I'm even surprised that I'm still using a PC with 6 years of slow use on most tasks.

With the arrival of the pandemic, this my PC became much more demanded. Before I only worked with him at night and on weekends. Now it’s required all day, pratically everyday. It remains great for office tasks, for Internet browsing with my dozens of tabs open at the same time, and for videoconferences that are now frequent.

On the other hand, for science experiments and for rendering / encoding videos there is no computer too fast. The more processing power the better, because more simulations can be performed in less time. Similar principle applies to RAM, the more memory available, bigger are the data sets I can handle.

So, I decided that if there is a good time to upgrade, é justamente agora em que eu passo a maior parte do dia dentro de casa e na frente do PC. A cotação do dólar e a escassez de produtos não está muito favorável. Se eu soubesse que isso aconteceria, teria feito esse upgrade no final do ano passado. But no problem, é nesse ponto que entra a AliExpress 🙂

Choice of AMD Ryzen processor 9 3900X

Avaliando os processadores atuais, the AMD Ryzen processor 9 3900X me pareceu a melhor pedida para o meu caso. With 3 vezes mais núcleos e mais threads, e ainda com núcleos ligeiramente mais rápidos e mais memória cache, ele tem mais que o triplo de poder de processamento que meu processador atual. Ele ainda aceita mais memória (128GB vs 32GB), tem maior largura de banda de memória, e consome menos energia.

In practice, isso significa que as tarefas que eu precisaria esperar um dia inteiro (24 hours) para serem finalizadas, now can be done in 8 hours. I can put it to run before going to sleep and the next morning is ready. It makes a considerable difference for me.

This is my first AMD processor, because I've been faithful to Intel since the years 90. I had a 286 and an 486 DX2 that I don't even know what brand they were. Then I had a NexGen Nx586. But from then on it was just Intel processors: Pentium MMX, Core 2, Intel 3, Pentium 4, Core i2 Duo, Core i2 Quad, second generation i7, and fourth generation i7, if I haven't forgotten any. On laptops I also only had Intel.

Intel and AMD have always had good competition, with similar prices and performances, even if one or the other had some advantage in each generation. But in this current generation, Intel seems to: at Intel Core i9-9900k, who would be the competitor of AMD Ryzen 9 3900X, has “only” 8 cores and 16 threads, and it costs more.

Even a Intel Core i9-10900k, that was launched this year, failed to match the number of cores in the AMD Ryzen 9 3900X. Stayed with 10 cores and 20 threads. Okay it has a higher turbo clock and for gamers, which should be the biggest market for these processor lines, he takes advantage. But for my use, the AMD Ryzen 9 3900X still takes advantage.

A negative point AMD Ryzen 9 3900X is that it does not have integrated video. Not that I was going to use it, because I already have one Video Gaming board MSI GeForce RTX 2060 Super 8GB. But I always thought it was cool to have a GPU onboard as “reserve”.

Another resource that I was left behind losing was the Intel Quick Sync Video, that encodes / decodes videos (h.264). But today the NVidia NVEnc of RTX 2060 already offers superior results than Quick Sync. Today both current Intel processors and RTX 2060 also offer H.265 / HEVC encoding. Anyway, in videos to archive I prefer to code by CPU software (x264, x265), which still has superior quality.

Purchase of AMD Ryzen processor 9 3900X

Electronics prices in Brazil have always been bad because of so many taxes. That's not news, it's been like this since i was born. The only president who did anything significant to improve this situation was Collor, opening the market and allowing imports. But from then on nobody did anything else.

The lack of good stores to purchase hardware to assemble PCs is also another problem. We have never had and I think we will never have Amazon (that of the USA) and NewEgg, how have the americans, with great variety and availability of products. There are always few options here, faces, with stocks that run out and are not replenished, long delivery times and guarantees that are not honored.

With the pandemic the situation only got worse, are even less options and even more expensive. At the time of my purchase, the AMD Ryzen processor 9 3900X was available at a Brazilian store (that “exploding”) for absurd R $ 4.392,82. And at the moment he is exhausted! In Amazon from Brazil it even appeared now for R $ 3,795.02. Surprised me, because it is not marketplace and is in 10 interest-free installments. But at the time there was no such option.

Anyway, the price of AliExpress still unbeatable. There the AMD Ryzen processor 9 3900X left for R $ 2.813,80 in 6 interest-free installments, including freight. I opted for the in-box version, new and sealed, with the original RGB cooler and everything. The same store also has options with only the new processor and even used processors, for those who will use another model of cooler or want to save a little more. Despite the higher volume of the in-box version, the package was not taxed.

In this way, buying at AliExpress the AMD Ryzen processor 9 3900X out 36% cheaper than the best price I had in Brazil at the time of my purchase, and 26% cheaper than that current price of Amazon do Brasil.

AMD's warranty is worldwide and, as far as i know, can be used in Brazil for products purchased abroad. So if this processor has a problem, can I do the RMA right here.

Unboxing

The AMD Ryzen processor 9 3900X came in its original sealed packaging, as expected. The package came declared as CPUs worth CNY 35.35.

The original product box was wrapped with thick cardboard and adhesive tapes, everything the exact size, without bubble wrap or other protection. This gives some extra protection, but with the mistreatment of the post office the original box still had some crumples. Note that this is nothing that affects the processor or the cooler, that are very well protected in the original packaging.

A larger box could provide additional protection, but it would also draw more attention. So I'm satisfied with the way the seller chose.

The processor was made in Malaysia, with the chips having been made in the USA and Taiwan. I checked the QR Code of the seal on the AMD website and I was able to confirm that the authentication code is valid and that it is a legitimate product:

Then I broke the seal and checked the processor and cooler. Everything was there: AMD peck, instruction manual, cabinhos, everything in perfect condition, as seen in the photos and video.

Unfortunately I haven't been able to test it yet, because I'm still waiting for motherboard and hair DDR4 memory modules. Because of this, this article is just one unboxing, but I will do all the tests when I have a motherboard and memory in hand.

Até o momento estou bastante satisfeito com a compra do AMD Ryzen processor 9 3900X 12 nuclei, 24 threads. Veio na caixa, sealed, all within the expected. If it works right, terá sido uma grande economia em relação à compra no Brasil.
