This article do unboxing from the Donald Duck: The Black Pearl Taboo, the volume 19 Definitive collection Carl Barks. They are being thrown out of order, and this is the sixteenth volume to be released, and the sixth to be launched by Panini. Note that Amazon made a mistake and put the title of this book as the volume 6. They are naming the volumes in the order that Panini is launching. I don't know what to do with all this confusion that only disturbs customers.
I have already talked about the other fifteen volumes already released Carl Barks Definitive Collection aqui no Skooter Blog, check:
- We lost Andes - Volume 7
- The Old Castle's Secret - Volume 6
- In Unicorn Search - Volume 8
- The Ghost Town - Volume 15
- The Parrot Counter - Volume 9
- Vil Metal and Villains - Volume 10
- Night Halloween - Volume 13
- Christmas in the Mountains - Volume 5
- The Secret of Hondorica - Volume 17
- The Lost Mine Perneta - Volume 18
- The Lost Crown of Genghis Khan - Volume 16
- The Little Train Of Joy - Volume 11
- Swimming in Money - Volume 12
- The Cities of Gold - Volume 14
- A Letter from Home and Carl Barks Collection - Volume 20
I've been reading the books in the collection in the order they were released and I'm currently in the Halloween. I'm really enjoying it. Some stories I already knew from some of my father's comics, years ago 60/70, that he keeps to this day and I was able to read it when I was a child / teenager.
Even after so many years of reading these stories, I realize when something seems to be a little out of what I remembered. Its the translation! How the translations were redone, some phrases are not the same as I remembered. But it’s hard to say if it’s better or worse without having the three versions side by side: original, translation of the years 60/70 and translation of Carl Barks Definitive Collection.
In a story, I don't remember exactly which book, Donald sings several songs from Pato Fu. How the band was created in the years 90, it is logical that these were not the songs of the first translation. But I don't remember reading this story before.
Another curiosity that I noticed is that the currency “patacas” seems to have been created by the translators, because in an original comic that appears in the analyzes at the end of the book I noticed that the term used was “bucks”, slang that Americans use to designate dollars, no direct relationship with ducks.
Por fim, the analysis of each story at the end of the book is interesting, bringing elements of the time that served as inspiration, cases where publishers censored Carl Barks, emphasis on elements of genius of the author, and even criticism for the less inspired stories. Only in a few cases is the analysis just a useless summary of the story. There are several analysts, so some went deeper and others only fulfilled the table.
